How the Football Tier List Works

The Football Tier List is a unique ranking game that challenges your knowledge of a football squad in a completely new way. Instead of answering trivia questions, you are asked to judge the quality and importance of each player on a team — one at a time, without knowing what comes next.

After selecting your league and team, the game randomly presents players one by one. You decide where each player belongs: GOAT, Elite, Very Good, Good, Average, Poor but OK, or Transfer. Once a tier reaches its limit, you can no longer add players there — unless you spend one of your three replacement tokens to swap an existing player out.

This blind-order mechanic transforms a simple ranking exercise into a genuine decision-making challenge. Should you save the GOAT spots for later, risking that an even better player appears? Or should you lock in your choices early and spend replacements if needed? Every tier list tells a story about how you see the squad.

When all players have been ranked, your result is saved with a unique shareable link. You can download it as an image, copy the link, and challenge friends to beat your rankings — or agree to disagree.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players can I put in each tier?▼
The GOAT tier is limited to 3 players maximum. All other tiers (Elite, Very Good, Good, Average, Poor but OK) can hold up to 5 players. The Transfer tier is unlimited — it acts as the overflow tier.
What are replacement tokens?▼
You start each game with 3 replacement tokens. When a tier is full but you want to place the current player there, you can spend a token to evict one of the existing players — who then moves automatically to the Transfer tier. Once all 3 tokens are spent, full tiers are locked.
Can I see all the players before starting?▼
No — that is by design. Players are shuffled and revealed one at a time so that every placement decision is made without knowing who comes next. This makes the game much more challenging and replayable.
Is my tier list saved permanently?▼
Yes. Every completed tier list is stored in our database and assigned a unique share code. Anyone with the link can view your result, even without an account.
How is my score calculated?▼
Your score starts at 1000 points and decreases slightly for each replacement token you use. A bonus of up to 400 points is added based on how closely your rankings match the community average. First-time rankings for a team receive a flat bonus.
Which teams are available?▼
Teams from the top European leagues are available, including the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1. The admin team regularly adds new leagues and teams.
